The Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64 is a symphony composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between May and August 1888, and is one of Tchaikovsky's most celebrated works. The symphony is one of many pieces (by him and other composers) that depict and contemplate fate using a musical motif that repeats throughout the work. It was first performed in Saint Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theatre on November 17th with Tchaikovsky conducting.
